Salvage Barbecue

September 9, 2013

I am so full beyond belief with Barbecue as I write this. I went to Salvage for dinner Thursday night, and I am highly impressed. I’ve always been a Barbecue fan, and pulled pork is my favorite. It was disappointing when I found out that Barbecue isn’t a top priority in Portland, but not anymore! Salvage is a beautiful restaurant and a great addition to the Portland food scene!

And in typical foodie fashion, I ordered way more food than I could ever actually eat.

The Cow Tray:

Beef Brisket

Chopped Pork

2 Sides: Mac n Cheese & Potato Salad

Well, I don’t even know where to start.

I obviously ordered more than enough food for one person. But wow, the flavors. And the tastes…that rare thing called food heaven was achieved last night, folks. Believe in BBQ!

Brisket

Although Barbecue has been a love of mine for a long time, Brisket is a recent addition. However, this brisket was unparalleled. I understand why Salvage doesn’t serve your food with real utensils but plastic ones instead. Because you don’t need anything besides a plastic fork to hold it and a plastic knife to nudge off pieces. You could eat it with your hands, if you wanted to. This was the most tender brisket I’ve ever tasted. Are we sure we haven’t been transported to the South?

Chopped Pork

I’m not sure words are enough for this tender and juicy pork. Though I’m not a bacon lover, pork is one of my favorite meats. And there was a ton of flavor to this pork, which was tender and amazing, even the next day (just ate some leftovers and I still was impressed) I’ve been searching for the perfect pulled pork sandwich, and I think this may be the place that has it. No complaints; the BBQ sauce on the table was a great addition but you can eat it plain as well and still be overwhelmed by the slightly smoky flavors that cause a cacophony in your mouth.

The sides were the perfect pairings, with a slightly tangy potato salad and good old fashioned mac n cheese. Definitely some Southern flavor on the menu, and pickles that I actually liked. It’s a first, in my life. These pickles are just a little sweet which appealed to my love of all things sweet.

Bottom Line:

Salvage is a worthy restaurant to try. If you like Barbecue and Southern flair, you have no excuse not to try this new hot spot! The food is great and the prices allow you to get more food in one sitting than you could possibly eat! What’s not to love?
